House Rules Updates: Death and Helpless Targets

The house rules for death saves were updated in two ways.

  • Added qualifier “as a result from an effect that didn’t already provide a saving throw”. It’s meant only for dying in melee. In the past, we’ve used it after someone died by fireball or dragon breath, but that wasn’t the intent.
  • Clarified that permanent ability damage can be reversed by restoration, and physical deformities can be fixed with a regenerate spell.

There are new house rules for attacking helpless targets, such those asleep or paralyzed. Melee attacks kill helpless targets instantly with no saving throw. It doesn’t trigger a free attack. And ranged attacks on helpless victims still require an attack roll and only do max damage unless a called shot is made.
