St. Orlan Fort Construction

On 2/1/5550, Amalgus has started a project to construct forts around St. Orlan to increase security. These will be placed in hexes 0409, 1308 and 0911. These will be modest forts with wooden palisades and a central tower. Estimated time of completion is 4/22. Each fort will have the same basic design, cost (40,000 gp) and estimated time to completion (80 days). This public works project can accept XP-for-GP donations.

Construction Plan

The fort’s rectangular layout can be reasonably estimated based on the need to accommodate the described internal structures, provide space for a central courtyard, and allow for movement between buildings without excessive crowding. Assuming a roughly 3:2 length-to-width ratio for practicality, the interior dimensions come out to approximately 240 feet long by 150 feet wide (providing about 36,000 square feet of usable space inside the walls). This allows sufficient room for the central keep (estimated at 40 feet by 40 feet base), barracks (50 feet by 40 feet), five workshops (30 feet by 30 feet each), two warehouses (40 feet by 30 feet each), cistern (20 feet by 20 feet), open-air shrine (30 feet by 30 feet area), subterranean chamber (40 feet by 40 feet, located underground), and additional open areas for paths, training, and storage. The gatehouse is recessed into one of the short walls, and the postern gate is hidden in one of the long walls.

This makes the wall lengths as follows:

  • Two long walls: 240 feet each
  • Two short walls: 150 feet each
  • Total perimeter length: 780 feet

WarehousesTwo 40 x 30 feet wood buildings (dry goods and food)3,000
Cistern20 x 20 feet wood-lined rainwater collector500
ShrineOpen-air simple shrine (minimal construction)100
GuardhouseIntegrated into gatehouse (no additional cost)0
Subterranean Chamber40 x 40 x 10 feet underground prison chamber with steep stair and heavy gate600

Total Estimated Construction Cost: 40,000 gp

Construction time would be approximately 80 days (1 day per 500 gp spent, per standard BFRPG rules), assuming adequate labor and no disruptions like weather or attacks. This assumes the site is cleared and materials are locally available (e.g., timber from nearby forests); costs could increase 20-50% if sourcing materials from afar or hiring specialists like engineers. The marshy moat leverages natural terrain, reducing excavation costs slightly.
